Well, the extravaganza of the NFL Draft is over. Oh boy. For years, I didn't even pay attention to the draft. More recently, I'd read up on the Eagles' picks after the draft was over. Now, I actually kind of follow along as it happens. The draft is a big deal for some in Utah since there is no local NFL team. Many people are concerned with how well their favorite college team is represented in big league.
This year, the State of Utah can be very proud, as 8 players from Utah schools were selected. The University of Utah led the way with six players drafted, including two in the second round. One player was drafted from BYU and one from... wait for it... WEBER STATE!
Yes, Weber State wide receiver Tim Toone was selected by the Detroit Lions (oh dear) with the 255th and final pick in the draft. This entitles Toone to wear the dubious title of "Mr. Irrelevant". He'll get to attend a series of celebrations in his honor during the month of June to celebrate his status as the last man "in".
The sad truth is that the name "Mr. Irrelevant" came about because the player picked here often doesn't even make the final cut on the pro team, and may never play a single professional game. Still, it is an honor to be one of only 255 college players deemed good enough to be drafted by a pro team, and I am excited that a player from Weber made it this far, at least.
Still, the most successful pro players from any of my three alma maters are both former Blue Hens quarterbacks: Rich Gannon and Joe Flacco.
